Second Grade SPREE Fieldtrip- We can still take 2 volunteers. We currently have two parents joining us.
Ms. Whiz, Mrs. Titus, and Mrs. Brady
Our classes will be visiting Bear Creek Park on Friday, March 9th. The bus will leave school at 9:15 a.m. and will return by 2:15 p.m.
Students need to dress for the weather; dressing in layers is the best idea. We will be outside for the entire day – regardless of the weather. They will also need a disposable sack lunch and plenty of water (to stay hydrated).
Parents are welcome to join us on this fun excursion, please plan on meeting us at the park as space is limited on the bus.
Description: The 2nd grade SPREE excursion takes place at Bear Creek Park. This excursion is an exploration of the living and non living elements of the Bear Creek ecosystem. The morning centers on non-living things with activities including a rock hunt, an individual explorative hike, and a mapping hike. The afternoon centers on the living components with activities including a nature hike, seed identification and getting to know a tree.
Activities: Plant Identification, Seed Identification, Life Box, Rock Scavenger Hunt, Everybody Needs a Rock, Burma Shave Hike, & Mapping
Location: Bear Creek Park is located along Hampden/285 at Raleigh St. **Don’t confuse this park with Bear Creek Lake Park!
This week in Superkids, we will:
Finish up Unit 6
Create and read compound words
Identify main idea and supporting details in a paragraph
Understand and use singular and plural pronouns
Identify the difference between fact and opinion
Ask your child to tell you what book they are reading in guided reading. Ask them to summarize the book. Bonus point if they write a brief summary.
Wanted.. (What did the characters want?)
But.. (What was the problem?)
So.. (Events that in the story that helped the character solve the problem)
Then.. (What was the resolution to the problem?)
In Writing, we will:
We have started timed writing prompts. The children have 15 minutes to write as much focused information about the prompts. Things that they MUST include are a topic sentence, 2-3 supporting opinion WITH DETAIL and a closing sentence. We will start having conferences about these specific details and how they can meet the requirements on the writing continuum. Ask your child to write about their favorite outside activities (this is a repeat form a prompt we have done at school). Set a timer for 15 mins and then check to see what details they have included, how focused they have stayed on their topic and what they need to work to add next time.
We will also, continue to use the writing process to our publish imagined stories. The children have been using graphic organizers to plan their imagined story. Elements that have include are: character, setting, at least 3 events, the problem and finally the resolution..
In math, we will continue to work on two and three digit subtraction and addition. Subtraction is a difficult skill when we move into two and three digit numbers. Please practice this skill at home. We are also working on solving how many more we need to get to 100.
Ask your child to name their strategy before solving. If I have $12 dollars and Mrs. Titus has $27. How many more do wee need to get to 100?
In Project Based Learning (PBL), we are starting our project about forces of nature. Our driving question is: How can we help communities affected by natural disasters. Throughout this project students will learn about the forces of nature and the impacts they have on people, land animals and communities. Students will then use their knowledge and resources to write an opinion paper and develop a plan of action. If you know of any communities resources that can help us with our project or come and speak to us, please let me know.
