This week in in Superkids skills we will be talking about CV, CVC and CVCe words. We will also review short and long vowels as well as words ending in y that sound like I and E and words that end in /ay/. We are also working hard on learning all our memory words. Don’t forget to practice you weekly spelling list and spelling patters. Ask your child: When a vowel is at the end of a word, does it make the short or long sound. In literacy groups, we have finished reading Frog and Toad and will begin reading our second chapter book: Nate the Great. Ask your child to retell the chapters they read this week. What is Nate’s big case? Your child should bring home their first Book Talk journal this week. This week in Writing, we are continuing to work on our Autobiographies. Your child will be working on their second and final drafts. They are busy learning the editing process. Ask your child what the “edit” process looks like (they had to fix spelling and punctuation errors). This week in math, your child will be learning strategies for solving story problems. We are finishing up unit one and will have our unit one post-test next week. Our biggest struggle in our pre-test was two step story problems and pulling out important information. Please make sure your child is doing their math story problem homework and please be sure to check it with them. Ask your child to explain their thinking on this week’s homework. We are learning that, “if we can teach it to someone, then I can prove I know it”. Technology: Your child will begin going to Mrs. Titus on Tuesday for Technology. They will have technology for 4 weeks and then they will have science with Mrs. Whiz. Thank you to those who have participated in our post card project. We have received about 10 so far. Please keep them coming and share with friends and family. Here is a recap of our postcard project: My second graders need your help! We are trying to see how many countries and places we can get post cards from all over the United States and world. The second graders will be studying different parts of the world, the people, art, music, culture and how people share family traditions through different forms of story telling. We will be marking off the places on our map and the children will use the post cards they receive to drive a future project based learning unit. Please share this with your friends and family. If you have a fun fact to share, please add that to the card, or a ways that part of the world is making the world beautiful and sharing kindness. Even just a simple, “Hello from___”. Please address them to: Mrs. Brady’s Second Grade Southmoor Elementary 3755 S Magnolia Way Denver, Co 80237 We will take the NNAT HGT test on Monday Sept 18th. This is a puzzle based test.
