I hope you all had a fantastic break. I was very busy getting all of my final papers submitted for my practicums and classes. I graduate December 15th and to get everything almost done is such an exciting feeling! I am SUPER thankful for that. I have missed all your children and am excited to hear about all the fun things that may have done over break. Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your support and for sharing your children with me. I am grateful for our amazing year so far in second grade!
In Superkids we will,
-Read words with gn/n/, wr/r/, and mb/m/
-Encode Pattern Words with kn, gn/n/ and wr/r/
-Read and write words with prefix un-
-Use a dictionary or glossary to determine spelling, pronunciation, and definitions
Ask your child, when a word ends in mb what letter is silent (the b)
What letter is silent in Kn, wr and gn (the first letter)
COMPREHENSION STRATEGIES/SKILLS FOR NONFICTION
-Determine important ideas
-Determine cause and effect
-Respond to text
-Give and support opinions
-Draw and support conclusions
-Connect text to self or experience
-Recognize text features
-Make and confirm predictions
-Compare and contrast texts or pictures
Ask your child, what article they read each day? What is the new issue of Super magazine about?
In Writing, we are beginning a new unit called Explanations. What does this mea? (to tell someone about something).
Ask your child to make a list of things they like to do. Ask them, using transition words, can you explain to me how to _____.
Classify and categorize words
Structure a piece of writing by using sequence words
Write expository texts and focus on a central idea
In math, we will begin a new session.
In this session, we will add and subtract within 100. Students will solve add to and take form story problems. Students will also determine whether a given equation equals 100.
-Children will use know combinations to add two or more numbers.
-Children will find the difference between 20 and a given number
Ask your child:
-How does knowing 6+6 help you solve 5+6 or 7+6
-If you have 2 strips and 6 single stickers + 2 strips and 3 single stickers, how many does you have? Show the equation and sticker notation.
I am so very grateful for all your support. Your children bring me such joy each day! Thank you for trusting me with them and being a partner in their education. I am one very, very lucky teacher!!
This week in Superkids, we are working on words with the soft g and the soft c sound.
Tip: soft c sounds lie an S and soft g sounds like a J when followed by i-e or y
In writing we will continue to work on our friendly letters.
-Dictate or write questions of inquiry
-Edit and rewrite sentences
We will be “elaborating” on our rough draft. How can we make our letter better. the children will give each other feedback and help each other add expanded details to their writing. Ask y
our child what does it mean to elaborate in your writing? Who are they writing a letter to?
In literacy we will read the book Mercy Watson Fights Crime. This book is about a pig who wonders downstairs to find some delicious toast but instead finds a cowboy robber in her kitchen. Ask your child to tell you what the theme of the books is, the problem and solution. Every night have your child make a prediction about what they will be reading tomorrow.
-Understand figurative language
-Make and confirm predictions
-Understand cause and effect
In math, the children will use palce value to represent a 2 digit number as tens and ones.
Ask your child:
What strategies can we use to solve this problem? 53+______= 70
If I have 47 stickers, how can I represent this in tens and ones. Use "sticker notation" and write an equation. What number is in the tens place and what number is in the ones palce?
Keep logging those minutes. We can earn a pizza party for being the class with the most minutes. The purpose of read-athon is to get kids EXCITED about reading. If you do not have sponsors, please do not stress. You can still log your reading minutes.
