Weekly Update 10/1

SPREE Field Trip is on October 11. We have not had any parent chaperones volunteer to go with us. If you can go with us, please let Mrs. Brady know ASAP. 
Your child will need to bring a sack lunch from home. If you will need to order a lunch from school, please let Mrs. Brady know right away.

This week in Superkids we will: 


-Decode and encode words with ar/är/, or/ôr/spelling patterns
-Encode Pattern Words with -art, -ark, -arm, -orn, -ort, -or
-Understand and discuss the meaning of Memory Words
-Recognize the meaning of nouns with -er endings
Ask your child: What sound do er, ir and ur sound like? Write a word that uses each of these patterns



In small reading groups we are: 

-Working on developing our comprehension skills and strategies for Non-Fiction texts. We will:
-Draw and support conclusions 
-Sequence events or steps
Connect text to self or experience 
Respond to text in writing
Recognize text features
Determine important ideas 
Ask your child: Can you identify 3 new facts you learned this week in while reading a your non-fiction texts. Why did the author write the article? What did the author want you to learn?


This week in writing, we will:

-Continue to work on Autobiographies and completing final drafts and illustration. 
-Some of us are finishing, so we will be asking for feedback and working on final drafts. 
-Evaluate own and others' writing
Ask your child: Why do writers need to write more than one draft? What does every sentence need? Do you know what step comes next after Revising your draft?


This week in math, we will:

-Students will solve story problems in relation to place value and base ten. 
-Students will think about how the base ten system and solving story problems using dimes, pennies and groups of ten and singles
-Students will solve one step story problems using addition and subtraction 
-Students will use different strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems:  number line, 100 grids, cubes and pictures.  
-Students will build fluency with addition and subtraction facts from 0-20. 
-Students will count by 2,5 and 10 (skip counting) which will help them to add and subtract on a number line.
Ask your child: Kira has 87 baseball cards. Each pack of cards has 10 in each pack. How many groups of 10 will she have? How many singles does she have?

This week in Superkids, we will:
Read words with /s/ /z/ /ss/ and /zz/
Recognize and practice plurals
Encode pattern words and spell memory words
Recognize syllables
Understand long and short vowels
Use memory and pattern words to complete sentences
Read and write words with plural endings –s and –es
Participate in discussions
Ask your child: What does plural mean? If a word is plural, what should it have at the end? How many syllables in the wordhelicopter?




This week in writing, we will:
Understand the writing process
Edit our first drafts of our Autobiography
Revise our first drafts
Create a second draft
Understand how to “extend” a sentence to clarify our thinking
Understand mechanics
Ask your child: Why do writers need to write more than one draft? What does every sentence need? Do you know what step comes next after Revising your draft?




This week in math, we will:
Solve a comparison story problem with the difference unknown
Dig deeper into subtraction
Practice moving left and right on the number line
Practice one-step word problems
Continue working on number strings
Develop fluency with addition and subtraction up to 20
Ask your child: Does order matter with subtraction? Why? When using a number line, do we go left or right with subtraction?

This week in Superkids, we will:

Read words with CV, CVC, CVCE, and CVVC vowel patterns
Encode pattern words with vowel at the end, silent e, and two vowels together
Complete rhymes and sentences
Discuss memory words
Understand and use antonyms
Read and illustrate words with short, long, and silent vowels
Identify the vowel sounds long i and long e
Encode words ending with ay
Understand and use adjectives
Understand idioms
Ask your child: What is an adjective? What does silent e do to vowels? What an is antonym?
 
This week in writing, we will:
Generate ideas before writing
Sequence events and steps
Use the writing process to plan an autobiography
Spell contractions
Understand and correct sentences that are incomplete
Understand and fix mechanics
Use organizational structure
Ask your child: What is an autobiography? What does every sentence need? Why do we make drafts of our writing samples? What are the steps to the writing process?
 
This week in math, we will:
Consider whether reordering the numbers in a subtraction problems results in the same difference.
Develop fluency with addition and subtraction within 20
Solving a comparison story problem with the difference unknown
Solve one-step or two-step story problems
Review ten frames
Ask your child: Does order matter with addition? With subtraction?  Be practicing math facts! Flash cards are available at most dollar stores.

This week in Superkids, we will:
Read words with /el/ and /ng/
Encode pattern words with /le/ and /ng/
Understand vocabulary to choose correct sentence endings
Understand homonyms bee, bug, to, two, too,
Discuss Onomatopoeia
Understand and identify nouns and verbs in sentences
Understand that some words can be both a noun
Write two sentences to provide a solution to a problem
Read rhyming words
Edit sentences for capitalization, spelling, and punctuation
Participate in discussions
In small group, we will be starting our book clubs. We will switch every two weeks between book club and magazines. We will:
Begin Frog and Toad
Understand words important to text
Use context clues
Sequence events
Draw and support conclusions
Connect text to self or experiences
Determine important ideas
Understand characters
Support conclusions
Recognize text features
Read with appropriate and natural phrasing
Ask your child: What is a homonym? Why do authors use onomatopoeia? What is noun? What is verb?


In writing, we will:
Give feedback on writing prompts (focusing on mechanics)
Distinguish between complete and incomplete sentences
Understand the differences between punctuation
Begin autobiography discussions and planning
Ask your child: What are the three things feedback needs to include? What does every sentence need? What is a run-on sentence?


This week in math, we will:
Continue to practice fluency with math facts
Review time
Understand number strings and problems with multiple addends
Discuss strategies for mental math
Practice subtraction on the number line
Distinguish the important information in word problems
Understand even and odd numbers
Ask your child: Give me an example of two even numbers and two odd numbers. When we subtract, do we go left or right on the number line? On a clock, which hand is the hour, long or short? If the minute hand is on the twelve, what can we say?

This week in Superkids, we will:

Understand memory words
Encode pattern words with /th/ and /wh/
Discuss onomatopoeia
Understand the homonym blossom
Recognize and distinguish between types of sentences
Understand and use end punctuation
Understand and form contractions
Identify irregular contractions
Write two sentences using don’t and won’t
Recognize and use apostrophes
Understand what a pun is
Ask your child: What is the ending sound to bath? What is the beginning sound to whale? Why do authors use onomatopoeia when writing a story? What do the contractions don’t and won’t stand for?
 
This week in writing, we will:
Recognize two parts to a sentence (subject and predicate)
Discuss the importance of mechanics
Understand different purposes of punctuation
Review sequence words
Generate ideas before writing
Follow oral directions
Free write
Use props to support spoken messages
Distinguish between complete and incomplete sentences
Ask your child: What is the difference between using a period and an exclamation point? Why do we need space when we write? Read the sentence The cloud moved across the sky and ask “What is the subject (the cloud) and predicate (moved across the sky) of that sentence?”

This week in math we will:
Name, notate, and tell time to the hour using analog and digital formats
Identify and recognize coins and their values
Generate equivalent expressions for a number
Develop fluency with addition within 20 (DO MATH FACTS WITH FLASHCARDS DAILY!!!)
Consider a generalization about reordering addends for all numbers
Consider whether reordering three addends results in the same total
Begin to discuss word problems and recognize important information
Fact families
Ask your child: Using a standard and digital clock, ask your child what is the time? Please be reviewing math facts every night with flash cards (If you need, I can make some for you!). The speed piece of math facts within 20 is super important this time of year.
