We did it!! The first week of second grade was a huge success. I am so proud of each and everyone of your children. We spent the first week learning the rituals and routines of the classroom. A few activities included:
-The children were given foil, pipe cleaners and popsicle sticks. they were told to create “something” with their team using only the materials provided. The point of this activity was to work as a team and to get their creativity flowing. Challenges encountered were: not brainstorming ideas with the team before starting, not agreeing on what to make and wanting to use other material such as glue, paper scissors ect. We has some really creative ideas such as palm trees, a dolphin and a planets. After the team building activity, the children were given their own materials to make something independently and then write a descriptive paragraph about their creation.
-We completed our beginning of year writing prompt. These are hanging inside the classroom.
-We discussed kindness and what it meant to throw kindness like confetti. We then created a self portrait and wrote about what we could do to share kindness. These are hanging outside of our classroom. Come check them out!
A few reminders:
-Pick up is on Peach Street at 3:45.
-I will ask for donations to provide for the afternoon (that seems to be a long stretch of time). Your child may bring a snack from home if they would like a morning snack. No sugar please.
-Southmoor Birthday Celebration Policy: We celebrate birthday’s once a month at Southmoor. Our birthday celebration day for the months of August & September is on September 9/28 . This helps us cut down on the amount of sweets brought into the classroom. If your child had a birthday in the month of August and in September, you may bring in a treat. Please email me so that we mix up treats and don't have a zillion cupcakes.
-Thursday Folders and homework will begin this week (Thursday). Stay tuned for more info

Dear Families and Friends,
Let me welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year. I hope you had a wonderful, relaxing summer. My name is Mrs. Brady and I will be your child's Second grade teacher. This is my 8th year as a teacher in DPS and my fourth year at Southmoor. I love teaching second grade because I know that second graders have some of the best traits that students can possess: curiosity, enthusiasm humor and they still believe in the magic of learning!
Second grade is a very important year as your child will be making the transition from learning to read towards reading to learn and reading to write. We will also be working on maturing as writers as well as becoming mathematicians and scientists. I can already tell that this school year is going to be filled with enthusiasm and lots of learning! This year, Ms. Hoover, Mrs. Hutson and Mrs. Brady are your second grade team and we will be collaborating in every way to ensure this year will make a positive impact on your child’s education.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to send a note or shoot me an email. I will communicate weekly about our classroom adventures and post pictures to our classroom website. Please take some time to explore the website and join our Bloomz App (more details on our website)
Our classroom website this year is: MrsBradysBunch.com
I’m excited about the opportunity to get to know your child, and I’m looking forward to a happy and productive school year. With your cooperation and support, I know that we can make this the best year yet!
