This week in Superkids,
we have started working in our word work books. Your child will review decoding and encoding using sh, ch, nouns, plural pronouns, possessive pronouns and —ch and -tech endings. We have also been working on reviewing our memory words. I will post a list of the memory words that your child will be assessed on this week under the homework tab on our website. In guided reading, your child has begun to read their SUPER magazine. Ask your child, What is your favorite Super Short you have read this week? (Tell me about: The Big Mean Frog, Crazy New Critters, and New Moves.

In writing, we are going to start to build toward writing autobiographies about ourselves. We are going to spend this week writing fun facts about ourselves. We are going to write clues about ourselves and have our friends try and guess the what clues belong to each student. Ask your child what clues they are sharing about themselves. What have they learned about their friend?
In Math, we will be stinging numbers together, finding missing numbers and spending lots of time on money. We will be working with combinations of money. Take some time to explore real money at home with your child. Have your child grab a handful of coins and help them count the total amount they have. We have also started math journaling. The children have been asked to explain their daily math thinking in writing using not inly numbers but words. This will allow for deeper level thinking and to develop their math brain. Ask your child, Which has more value, 12 pennies or two dimes? How do you know?
In social studies, we will continue our work on cultivating a growth mindset. We will also begin to discuss family tradition in the coming weeks. I would also like to start a postcard project. If you have family members that could send us a post card from anywhere in the world, we would absolutely LOVE that. We are going to see how many places we can get a post card from and see who many different places we can discover. Our first post card from Dubai should arrive soon (shhhhh). Look for more information soon. But please share, share, share to as many people as possible.
They can be addressed to Mrs. Brady’s Second Grade Southmoor Elementary 3755 S Magnolia Way, Denver, CO 80237

Please check the pictures tab for a ton of pictures form last week.
Don’t for get to always check the google calendar for upcoming events.

The first day of school (hooray):

This first post is very long as it contains first week learning & eclipse information:

We will have a flag ceremony at 9:00 on the black top by the playground. After that, you are welcome to walk your child into the building (if you are feeling the first day blues, or feel free to run on out of there for a nice little end of summer happy dance). There will be Kleenex and Coffee offered for parents that morning too. We will see you at 3:45 outside the Peach Street entrance for dismissal. Please make sure you have your child connect with me each day before saying goodbye, those excited feet tend to run off for hugs after a long day. Hopeful reminders form you about saying goodbye to me the first few weeks are very appreciated.

Eclipse Information:

PTO has provided each student with FDA approved eclipse glasses. The entire school will eat lunch outside from 11:30-12:00 with our glasses. I have planned an entire Eclipse Morning full of information, activities but most importantly EYE SAFTEY!! If you would like to check out one of the links I will be sharing with the kids about eye safety, I am posting it below. Do not worry, this will not be skimmed over and I will spend a significant amount of time going over the importance of not looking at the sun without the special, super cool glasses on!! We will NOT be having outside recess between 9:30am and 1:30pm. If you would not like your child outside during the eclipse lunch viewing, please let me know and I will make sure your child is inside during this time.

Here is an information video about the eclipse:

The first week of school students will be learning about rituals and routines. We will talk about developing a growth mindset, being a good citizen, perseverance, respect and safety. We will spend much of this week building a community and setting personalized learning goals.

If you have not yet signed up for the BLOOMZ App, please take a few minutes to visit our classroom website homepage for instructions on how to sign up. This will be an important way for us to stay in touch. Also, please do not forget that it is your responsibility to check our website each Monday for class updates and reminders. Don’t forget to check the Google calendar on the “Class News” tab for upcoming events.

This week in Literacy, we will work on building a classroom community,  set up our rituals and routines and learn about developing a growth mindset. We will read The Fantastic Elastic Brain. We will also read: The Most Magnificent Thing Ask your child: What is the difference between a fixed mind set and a growth mindset.

This week in Math, we will explore our math tools, set rituals and routine in rotations. We will begin our Investigations curriculum on Wednesday. The children will recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces.

This week in writing, we will read Miss Rumphius. The children will discuss their hopes and dreams not only for second grade but we wold also like to begin to set a bigger purpose outside of school. The book ends will Miss Rumphius living a very full life but challenging the children who come visit her to, “Do something to make the world more beautiful.” Ask your child, what their hopes and dreams for second grade are. What do they hope to do for our community to make it more beautiful?

This week in social studies, your child will stay with me for the next 4 week for social studies. This year we will go on a work tour, exploring different cultures, and how they communicate stories and traditions through music, art, and dance. We will read Dear Teacher and your child will write me a letter describing an adventure they would like to go on anywhere in the world. I am hopeful this will drive a future Project Based Unit… we will see how this develops. We will also discuss how to be a good citizen. Ask your child, what does being a good citizen mean?

Thank you and have a great week! Please tell your children that I am SO excited for tomorrow!!
Please comment below or email me with any questions.
