Small group: What book are you reading in small group right now? What characters have you met so far? Any predictions so far?
This week in writing, we will:
Continue discussions on Pioneers
Understand the California gold rush and gold mining
Compare and contrast the differences in Pioneer clothing, way of life to now
Practice “trading” and understand the barter system
Learn about the Oregon Trail
Discuss troubles pioneers faced
Ask your child: What are three reasons someone would move west? (to escape from non ideal situations, to find gold, to look for adventure, to look for an opportunity to own land, opportunities to create businesses). How was life in the Pioneer days different to how we live now? What were some troubles that pioneers faced?
This week in math, we will:
Recognize and name the coins penny, nickel, dime, and quarter
Know the value of coins and paper denominations
Count the amount of money represented by a set of coins or bills
Fluently add within 100
Money vocabulary: cent, penny, nickel, dime, quarter, dollar (bills)
This unit moves very quickly. The lessons introduce money and then immediately jump into quite difficult word problems.
Ask your child: Why does it take more dimes to make a dollar than it does quarters? What are some ways we can make 100 cents? If I buy a basketball for $14 and pay with a $20 bill, how much change will I receive?
Welcome to Second Grade. Together we will learn, wonder, grow, explore, make mistakes, play, laugh and inspire each other to be the best that we can be.
